The county takes its name from Carlow town, sitting on the River Barrow. Carlow town is home to over 40% of the county’s population. Carlow’s history is marked by the Norman influence, with the town being founded in 1207 and the county established shortly after. The county was once the seat of power for the Kingdom of Leinster and the capital of the Lordship of Ireland during the 14th century.
One popular landmark in Carlow is the Brownshill Dolmen, a megalithic portal tomb dating back 6,000 years, known for its massive capstone, which is said to be the heaviest in Europe.
