County Meath in the province of Leinster is named after the old Kingdom of Meath, and has been called The Royal County since centuries ago the High Kings of Ireland were crowned at the Hill of Tara in the center of Meath.

County Meath is filled with historic sites, with the Boyne Valley containing the largest grouping of megathlic carved stone art in Western Europe.

The tomb complex of Brú na Bóinne dates from 3000BC and is 500 years older than the Pyramids of Giza in Egypt. It includes the Newgrange monument, which is the earliest known astronomically aligned building in the world, being alligned with the rising sun on the Winter Solstice.

Meath is the largest producer of Zinc in Europe. The Tara Mine in Navan is Europe's largest and deepest mine, and produces millions of tonnes of Zinc and Lead each year.

Meath is also a large cement producer, and has over 4500 farms producing beef, dairy, pork, poultry, vegetables and grain.

County Meath is home to 195,000 people. Some famous names hailing from the county include the actor Pierce Brosnan, and the inventor of the Beaufort Scale of wind strength, Francis Beaufort.

The county town of Meath is Navan, and other large towns include Trim, Kells, Laytown, Ashbourne, Dunboyne and Slane.

Trim Castle is Ireland’s Largest Anglo-Norman Castle and was featured in the film Braveheart.
